Course overview
This course includes two complimentary units
- Communication NC
- Literature 1.
In both units, you will interpret, analyse and produce complex written and spoken communication.
In Communication NC you will develop practical skills in understanding, analysis and evaluation of non-fiction texts. You will also learn to use complex, formal English in different types of written and spoken communication which would be used in a professional context, such as reports and presentations.
In Literature 1 you will read and critically respond to a variety of complex literature include novels, short stories, poetry, film and/or drama. All assessments are open-book and untimed, and you will have the opportunity to redraft work based on feedback from your lecturer.

How the course is assessed
Communication:
- Outcome 1: Analyse and evaluate complex written communication - respond to questions by analysing and evaluating one piece of complex non-fiction.
- Outcome 2 Produce complex written communication which mainly presents, analyses and evaluates a substantial body of information and develops an in-depth argument or point of view. It should be a minimum of 650 words.
- Outcome 3 Analyse and evaluate complex spoken communication, respond to questions and analyse and evaluate, one example of complex spoken communication.
- Outcome 4 Deliver and participate in complex spoken communication - produce one example of complex oral communication such as an individual presentation which should last a minimum of five minutes (with additional time for questions) or a significant contribution to an in-depth group discussion.
Literature 1:
- Outcome 1 Analyse and evaluate literary texts in different genres - produce two written or oral responses to demonstrate you have analysed and evaluated two texts from two different genres. Each response must be a minimum of 400-500 words (or 6 minutes of spoken material).
- Outcome 2 Critically respond to an unseen literary text - demonstrate you can critically respond to an unseen literary text by discussing structure, style and language as well as explaining how those techniques create effect and impact.
Number of days per week
- One on campus at Sighthill and one online.
Entry requirements
- Core Skills Communication Level 5
- National 5 English or equivalent.
