Course overview

This qualification is designed for delegates who maintain and repair electric/hybrid vehicles with the knowledge and skills to work on live high-voltage vehicle electrical components and associated systems. It also demonstrates, in a practical way, their knowledge of high voltage diagnostic, testing and repair procedures.

What you will learn

  • 3 days of hands-on practical diagnosis and testing on live electric vehicles, providing real-world scenarios.
  • This course builds upon fundamental knowledge of electric and electronic systems, offering participants a comprehensive exploration of advanced diagnostic techniques, tools, and methodologies of electric and hybrid vehicles.
  • Participants will delve into the intricate component operations that make up an EV, including batteries, electric motors, charging systems, and sophisticated protection devices.

This course provides the knowledge and skills to work on live high-voltage vehicle electrical components and associated systems. A good level of electrical understanding is required before completing this course. The content of this course should always be used in conjunction with manufacturers’ specific safety data.

Please note, that this course does not cover commercial or domestic electrical installations including, charging equipment and cables.

How the course is assessed

Individual practical assessments

  • Prepare the high-voltage battery to be removed from the vehicle.
  • Remove and replace a high-voltage battery module from the vehicle's high-voltage battery.
  • Balance high-voltage battery modules.
  • Refit the high-voltage battery to vehicles.
  • Carry out a functional check on the high-voltage vehicle systems following the successful completion of the repair.

Written assessment

(This is not part of the 3-day course and must be submitted within the four weeks following course delivery)

The summative written assessment is based on workshop activities during the course. Data and results from practical tasks should form part of the report. Each delegate is required to evidence knowledge/understanding and provide detailed explanation, analysis and evaluation of working on live high-voltage vehicle systems and components on electric/hybrid vehicles including;

  • Safe systems of work including, PPE, legislation, regulations, codes of practice and manufacturer’s safety notices
  • Diagnostic procedures
  • Removal and installation of high-voltage components such as battery modules
  • High voltage component evaluation
  • Functional testing of the vehicle following repairs

Number of days per week

  • 3-days
  • IMI Level 4 Award in the Diagnosis, Testing and Repair of Electric/Hybrid Vehicles and Components: £945. This includes certification and regisitration fees.

Entry requirements

  • Delegates need to have completed a Level 3 Hybrid and EV Qualification prior to joining the course.
  • It is recommended that delegates have a minimum of 6 months related/relevant industry experience.
