Course overview

Routes into Care and Childhood Practice is an engaging and nurturing course, that allows students to learn more about how to work with and support children, young people and adults, understand and support their needs, and identify different job roles and opportunities in the caring sector, from birth to older adulthood.

This course has been specially designed to support you in starting your journey towards further study and employment in:

  • Childcare and Early Learning
  • Social Services and Care

This is an SCQF Level 4 course (equivalent to National 4 qualifications).

If you successfully achieve this course you will be automatically offered a place on either a next steps Routes course, Childhood Practice or Health and Social Services, Level 4 or 5 courses in January.

You will be taught by highly qualified and experienced lecturers and have support from the team at Edinburgh College allowing you to progress to the next step of your learning journey while taking part in a wide range of engaging and interactive learning opportunities.

We have created an online notice board (Padlet) to help prepare you for your course. This will be regularly updated with information including contact details, timetables, support info, etc.

Placement information

  • There is no placement or work experience on this course.

How the course is assessed

  • We will use a range of interactive and engaging activities to assess your work.
  • You will complete a project linked to the key areas of the course, showcasing your learning.
  • You will keep a reflective log of your learning, well-being and experiences.

Number of days per week

  • 3 days per week.

  • There are no formal entry requirements for this course.
  • Be enthusiastic and committed to working with others and learning about working with others in a range of care services and settings. 
  • Places are limited on this course, we will use your Personal Statement to help our selection process.

The English proficiency requirement for this course is IELTS 5.5

Progression and Articulation Routes

If you complete this course you will be automatically offered a place on either:

  • Next steps Routes into Care
  • Childhood Practice, Health and Social Services, Level 4 or 5 courses in January

We will work with you to identify the most suitable courses to meet your learning interests and needs.

Career options

  • This course will introduce you to several skills and learning that will support you in further study or employment. 
  • Future career options could include working with children in a nursery, supporting people with additional support needs or looking after older people in a residential care setting.
