Leila has illustration work selected by BBC’s History Magazine

An Edinburgh College HND Illustration student has secured a landmark achievement as her work has been chosen to feature in the renowned BBC History Magazine.

Leila Omerova, who is originally from Ukraine and is in her second year of studying at the College, was selected by the magazine after submitting a design as alongside her classmates in response to a live brief set by the BBC.

The brief challenged students to design an opening double-page spread for the Christmas issue of the magazine illustrating the “Books of the Year 2024” feature. The spread needed to creatively intertwine elements of history with books while leaving space for the title and a stand-first – the introductory paragraph of the feature. The “Books of the Year” article highlights top history books of 2024, as selected by notable personalities.

The BBC History Magazine brief was an incredible opportunity for myself my classmates. Receiving a live brief from a national magazine was exciting and provided me with invaluable real-world work experience. The short two-week deadline meant there was a real intensity amongst excitement. I admit I did have a couple of sleepless nights but it was definitely worth it. I am very passionate about using wool to make my artistic pieces and incorporated this passion by needle-felting characters for my submission. I would like to thank my lecturers Glen McBeth and Doug Watson for being very supportive, helpful and guiding me throughout my journey. Their advice to experiment with my art and to push the boundaries on my ideas is advice I will always remember. I am extremely happy and grateful to see my illustration in the December issue of BBC History Magazine. This is only the beginning and I am now even more motivated to carry on with my artistic journey, which is sometimes challenging but also amazing

This has been an amazing opportunity for our second year HND Illustration students to get a live brief from a huge national magazine. It's great that this project gives all of our students a real-world work experience and helps to prepare them for life as a freelance illustrator. All of our students worked hard on this we were really impressed with the variety of styles and concepts, and the quality of work that they sent to the magazine. Congratulations to Leila whose work was selected to feature in the magazine, and we can't wait to see it in print.
