Course overview

Everybody wants to be a videographer, content creator, or even a director! We watch our favourite movies and feel inspired to create our cinematic works of art. But where do we start?

This course is designed to introduce you to two vital areas of production: how to properly use your camera (along with sound and light equipment) and, once you’ve captured your footage, how to edit and compile it into a cohesive piece.

This course is perfect for anyone who wants to unleash their creative filmmaking potential. Mastering the basics is one of the keys to producing exceptional videos.

Who this course is for?

Enthusiasts wanting to learn how to create and edit videos. This course is student-friendly, homeschool-friendly, and ideal for beginner-level video creators looking to build their skills.

What you will learn

Part 1: Basic Camera Techniques

  • Types of digital semi-professional and professional camcorders
  • How to set up and prepare a camcorder for work
  • Additional equipment and useful devices (sound, lighting)
  • How to shoot a video using shot composition and filming techniques

In this course, you will learn how to use your digital camcorder and other semi-professional and professional video camcorders. You’ll also learn how to manage your digital files, incorporate compositional elements into your videos, and evaluate your and others' work.

Part 2: Basic Video Editing

  • Essential tools for video editing (Adobe Premiere Pro)
  • Preparing and organizing media for editing
  • Basic video editing techniques
  • Video editing workflows

This course will guide you through the basics of video editing. Media has become an integral part of life, and having editing skills can be beneficial in various contexts. Equip yourself with the skills to excel in basic media projects or develop your hobbies. This section of the course is designed to provide a solid foundation for kickstarting your passion for video editing.

How the course is assessed

  • You will be set tasks as you work through the course, building towards a portfolio of work on which you will be assessed. 

Number of days per week

  • Tuesday evenings from 6.00 PM to 8.30 PM.

Entry requirements

  • Participants should have a basic understanding of computer operations, including file management, and be comfortable using standard software.
  • Familiarity with navigating operating systems and managing digital files is essential for successful participation.

Progression and Articulation Routes

  • You could progress onto one of our full-time courses at either UAL Level 2 or SCQF Level 6.

Career options

  • This course is suitable for beginner-level video creators wanting to do more and develop their career options in Digital Media for TV, Film, and Video Production.
