Course overview
The HND Sports Therapy (year 2) will improve the skills, competencies and techniques learned in the HNC Sports Therapy (Soft Tissue Therapy), and build on the practical opportunities previously gained to enhance essential industry experience. This will include running Edinburgh College-based sports clinics and having more responsibility at previously attended events.
What you will learn
- You will develop the skills, competencies and techniques previously learned in HNC Sports Therapy to analyse, plan and evaluate appropriate sports therapy treatment. This course will advance your knowledge and understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the human body along with biomechanics and movement patterns.
- You will learn taping techniques, the use of electrotherapy as a treatment, how to plan and deliver sports-based rehabilitation programmes, explore the psychology of sports injury, health promotion activities and clinical assessment of sports injuries.
How the course is assessed
You will be assessed on an ongoing basis in both practical and theoretical settings, including the following assessment methods:
- class-based assessment
- practical observations
- report writing
- presentations
- logbooks
- portfolio work
- assignment tasks

Entry requirements
- You will have passed the HNC in Soft Tissue Therapy with sufficient additional optional units to achieve 15 credits
- You should currently be participating regularly in exercise and fitness activities.
- You should be able to achieve a suitable level of clearance through the PVG scheme

- Upon successful completion of the HND programme in Sports Therapy, you may have the opportunity to go directly into the world of work or potentially articulate into Year 3 of Degree programmes in Sports Therapy, Sport and Exercise Rehabilitation, Physical Activity, Health and Wellbeing or Sport and Exercise Science.
Career options
You may gain direct entry to employment as a Sports Therapist by setting up your own business practice or in a range of health fitness or sports-based establishments such as.

- Local authority sports centres and health and fitness clubs.
- Hotels and conference centres with health and fitness facilities.
- Sports clubs that require massage therapy to support training and recovery of players/athletes.
