Course overview
Upon completion of the course, students will achieve the internationally recognised and highly regarded UAL Level 3 Diploma in Music Performance and Production – following a specialised Sound Production pathway.
The course is an exciting pathway into live sound, podcast production, foley creation, and studio recording techniques. You will learn how to create and produce your own music from start to finish, developing skills in recording, mixing and production.
The course is ideal for any budding music producers, studio engineers, live sound operators, film/TV sound recordists and sound designers for games. The course will provide you with the technical skills to start your career in the music and sound production industry, whilst developing your confidence in various aspects of audio production.
The UAL Level 3 Diploma in Music Production has been designed to provide learners with the skills, knowledge, and understanding necessary to progress to further study and training in a range of sound production disciplines. It has been designed for students with an interest in sound production who wish to explore and extend this interest via a full-time, immersive learning experience.
Many students will have identified a specific career in the creative industries that they wish to progress to (e.g. producer, engineer, etc.), using this qualification to build on skills and knowledge acquired via Level 2 qualifications such as the UAL Level 2 Sound Production or SQA National 5.

How the course is assessed
- As a project-based course, to best reflect industry practice, the course is mainly assessed through the completion of several integrated projects (rather than tests and exams).
- Projects will be completed at various points of the year and submitted using relevant mixed-media portfolios, performances, and creative products such as recordings, videos and session files.
- In addition to ongoing continuous assessment of project work, formative assessment forms a large part of the course with tutorials and weekly feedback sessions.
Number of days per week
- 2.5 days per week with an additional time allocated for self-directed study
Entry requirements
- Two qualifications at SCQF Level 5 preferably in Music/Music Technology, Media or Computing
- Core skills at SCQF Level 4
